Deux assainissements avec amphores à Mayence (Germanie supérieure)

International audienceA large amount of intact amphorae have been found in two sites of Mainz: at Hopfengarten, the 12 vessels were of Pelichet 46 type and among the 138 amphorae at Dimesser Ort, a majority came from the Iberian Peninsula, for the transport of fish sauce and olives. Nine of them at Hopfengarten bear painted inscriptions, some being identical and suggesting they came from the same shipment. They were recovered some 150 m south-west of the Flavian port at Kappelhof. Previously the large number of complete amphorae from Dimesser Ort was interpreted as evidence for the early Roman port of Mogontiacum (Mainz) being situated here. But a renewed study of the background showed that they were part of a drainage system dating from the last third of the 1st century to the first half of the 2nd century AD. This kind of drainage, unknown further north in the Empire, was certainly imported from Roman Italy and Gaul.Dans deux secteurs de Mayence, au Hopfengarten et au Dimesser Ort, quantité d'amphores entières ont été découvertes lors de fouilles anciennes : douze au Hopfengarten, toutes de type Pelichet 46, et cent trente-huit au Dimesser Ort, ce sont surtout des amphores ibériques (sauces de poisson et olives). Neuf amphores du Hopfengarten portent les noms de transporteurs, souvent les mêmes, ce qui laisse supposer une livraison groupée. Les amphores ont été trouvées à quelque 150 m au sud-ouest d'un port romain flavien, au Kappelhof. Jusqu 'alors, le grand nombre d'amphores entières découvertes au Dimesser Ort avait fait penser à des entrepôts liés à un port romain précoce de Mogontiacum/Mayence. Une nouvelle lecture du contexte des découvertes montre que les amphores ont été en réalité réutilisées pour construire des vides sanitaires et des drainages, datés entre le dernier tiers du Ier s. et la première moitié du IIe s. Les systèmes d'assainissement développés à Mayence se révèlent être les exemples les plus septentrionaux de l'Empire romain. Cette technique a certainement été importée en Germanie supérieure d'Italie et de Gaule
