L'ethnologie et les troupes folkloriques haïtiennes. Politique culturelle, tourisme et émigration (1941-1986)

International audienceDuring the years 1930-1940, Haiti became a crossroads and a field of investigation for Haitian, American and French ethnologists. Haitian indigenism and cultural anthropology have certainly given voodoo its nobility, but this valuation was part of the power relations that then passed through Haitian society. One of the reasons for which the cult was discredited throughout the nineteenth century, its African origin, was the very one by which it was valued, the golden youth of the Haitian elite being sensitive to the international success of the imaginary produced on Africa in the years 1920-1930. However, the essentialist tendency of culturalism reinforced this image of worship as the natural attribute of a marginalized peasant and working population. The inclusion of voodoo in a nationalist frame, whose reconfiguration of Haitian historiography echoed, is concomitant of its aestheticization in the field of letters and arts. The cult was apprehended by its intellectual promoters, indigenists and blacks, as the vector of an added value, both aesthetic and political, which was part of the affirmation of a black popular consciousness. L'un des motifs pour lequel le culte fut déconsidéré tout au long du XIX e siècle, son origine africaine, fut celui-là même par lequel il fut valorisé, la jeunesse dorée de l'élite haïtienne étant sensible au succès international de l'imaginaire produit sur l'Afrique dans les années 1920-1930. Cependant, la tendance essentialiste du culturalisme renforça cette image du culte comme étant l'attribut naturel d'une population paysanne et ouvrière marginalisée. L'inclusion du vaudou dans une trame nationaliste, dont la reconfiguration de l'historiographie haïtienne se fit l'écho, est concomitante de son esthétisation dans le champ des lettres et des arts.
