International audienceRecent studies on fired clay building materials put to light their dating and utilization in Celtic and Roman architecture. Tiles appear as soon as the Late Republican period in the roofing of aristocratic buildings and they often are associated to decorative clay artefacts (zoomorphic or anthropomorphic) such as a series of human head antefixes found in several sites of east-central Gaul. Their discovery in contexts dated to the 2nd and 1st centuries BC is astonishing, and so are their stylistic features which remind of the Etruscan terracottas. Locally produced, these antefixes probably depict heroized warriors and serve as a vehicle for the aristocratic ideology among the Gaulish upper-classes.Les récentes études me...
