International audienceThis article aims at explaining the use of extra causam arguments in Cicero's De praetura siciliensi from a rhetorical point of view. It first analyzes the rhetorical concept of causa and later identifies the various criteria that might be used to pinpoint extra causam passages in Cicero's discourse. Those passages show that, instead of being mistakes or defects, as the ancient theory of discourse would have us think, extra causam arguments are central to Cicero's rhetorical strategy. When built in order to go unnoticed, they provide a powerful tool for amplificatio; when marked out by the orator himself, they paradoxically legitimate the use of irrelevant or invalid proofs.
