What threatens the Duchess’s brothers, in his treatment, is less her violation of social and sexual norms than her achievement, in the company of Antonio, of a sense of personal fulfilment and plenitude. This achievement is encoded as discursive presence, and it destabilises her brothers to the point where they seek, finally at their own expense, to project upon her their own sense of absence and isolation.
