Aging in psychology has been investigated for decades and general aging declines in behavioral cognitive tasks have been well established. With advances in neuroimaging techniques, some changes have been found in the brain activity patterns of older adults. Their associations with better performance indicate their functions as compensations rather than impairments. The nature of these compensations is unknown: Are they passive responses to structure impairments or active adaptations to the altered environments.
