To determine the potential benefits of developing irrigation in northern Réunion, the authors used a sugarcane growth model to simulate expected yield gains due to irrigation. This study was launched in response to new provisions of the Common Market Organisation for sugar, which will induce a sugar price reduction In Réunion that will become effective in 2013. To ensure the survival of the sugarcane cropping sector, Réunion departmental authorities thus want to pro-mote irrigation in a zone hitherto not irrigated in order to improve its productivity.
