Sparsely populated and abundant in rich and exotic bio-diversity, the vast and highly inaccessible Mamberamo Basin in Indonesia's West Papua (Irian Jaya) contains some of the world's most pristine rainforests. The region's 7,000 people and their communities are spread over 7.7 million hectares of low-swamps, vast forests and high mountains, and maintain considerable wariness: owards outsiders. This article concerns the villagers of one such community, focusing on how they perceive and prioritize their natural resources, landscape and the conservation of the surrounding floodplain and watershed.
