Les palmiers issus de la régénération de palmiers à huile par embryogenèse somatique présentent une anomalie florale qui affecte les deux sexes. La fidélité phénotypique dépend du type de cal utilisé pour la micropropagation. Les cals compacts nodulaires (CCN) régénèrent des palmiers variants à 5%, et les cals à croissance rapide (CCR) régénèrent des individus "mantled" à 100%. Afin de caractériser les mécanismes épigénétiques inhérents à cette variation somaclonale, les auteurs ont évalué le taux de méthylation globale de l'ADN génomique et les changements dans les voies de transduction de signaux chez les deux types de cals embryonnaire
