Quatre trypanosomes sont pathogènes du cheptel est-africain. La caractérisation génétique par la technique PCR montre que les 4 espèces sont composées de sous-groupes différents mais morphologiquement similaires. Elles sont du sous-genre #Nannomonas#. La technique PCR confirme la complexité de l'affinité entre #T. congolense# et les mouches tsé-tsé du sous-groupe #G. morsitans# et #G. palpalis#.
