L'induction de cals à partir d'explants de feuilles de canne à sucre est possible avec un taux de réussite variable selon les hybrides commerciaux utilisés. Ces cals peuvent regénérer des plantes entières si le transfert sur milieu de regénération est suffisamment rapide. L'embryogenèse somatique est obtenue indirectement par la formation de cals noduleux et blancs sur les explants foliaires. L'analyse biochimique montre que les cals embryogènes se distinguent des autres cals par une forte teneur en amidon, en protéines, en acides aminés et en hormones végétales.
