This paper analyses differences in walking patterns in three outer London suburban neighbourhoods. Primary data were collected on people’s reasons for walking and their actual routes taken around the area. The aim was to gain an understanding as to why people walk in suburban town centres and whether urban configuration affects the pattern of movement of different groups of users. The findings show clear differences in usage patterns and trip length according to the degree of familiarity with the area as well as the location of physical barriers to walking routes, such as railway lines.
