Big data distributed storage systems will require a large storage backbone to store, process and analyse massive volumes of data. Such systems employ cheap commodity hardware for storage that are failure-prone, attributed to events like maintenance shut downs, software glitches or periodic outages. Replicating data is the default mechanism for ensuring reliability. With the exponential increase in the data that need to be stored, replication no longer serves to be a feasible option given the immense storage overhead incurred.
