One of the key proposed processes underlying metastasis, including the escape to the bloodstream, is epithelial- mesenchymal plasticity (EMP). This refers to the dynamic transition between epithelial and mesenchymal phenotypes of cells within the primary tumour mass. Within the bloodstream, tumour cells and tumour DNA, which are referred to as circulating tumour cells (CTCs) and circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA), respectively, have showcased their potential use as liquid biopsy in cancer management.
