Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of the human disease Q fever, is a unique intracellular bacterial pathogen. Coxiella replicates to high numbers within a pathogen-derived lysosome-like vacuole, thriving within a low pH, highly proteolytic and oxidative environment.
