While transient inflammation is a physiological reaction to uterine contamination during breeding, its persistence is one of the main causes for decreased pregnancy rates in affected horses. The research described in this thesis focussed on identifying the molecular mechanisms that underpin inflammatory processes in the uterus. To obtain results with a minimal amount of biological variation, a model of bacterial inoculation at different stages of the equine oestrous cycle was established.
