Cerebral brain lesions have long been considered to be the primary underlying neuropathology. There is now increasing recognition of cerebellar abnormality, particularly maturational deficits, as a complication of preterm birth, and mounting evidence for potential ‘cross-talk’ between the cerebrum and cerebellum.
