This article argues that the rhetoric of the Irish constitution has an important role in shaping the meaning of the text, even though much of it is technically non-jusiticiable. It shows how the current preamble is fundamentally inconsistent with the actual consensus political values of the Irish polity particularly in its conception of the relationship between religion law and state
