Entrance to university: special concessions for mature-age students

Master of EducationThis thesis examines the history and effectiveness of concessions made to mature age students seeking University entrance in Victoria. The thesis specifically addresses the question of the desirability of maintaining a special University entrance scheme for mature age students entering Melbourne University. In addressing this question, three main areas have been investigated. (i) An historical resume, indicating when concessions were first introduced, why they were introduced, and changes that have occurred in the provisions. In particular, to investigate why the concessions were maintained, and to establish the rationale for changes which occurred. (ii) An investigation of the academic performance of mature age students, both at the H.S.C. examination and at tertiary level, in an attempt to compare this group with the normal age group. (iii) An investigation of the concessions as they effect the individual student. Via a series of case studies, to attempt to determine the usefulness of the concessions in the past, and hence the desirability of continuing them into the future.
