On the other hand, moderate drinking has an apparent beneficial effect on cardiovascular health and is associated with lower mortality while heavy drinking is associated with higher mortality than abstinence. The evidence comes mainly from epidemiological studies which have measured alcohol consumption close to study enrolment (‘current’ drinking).
