© 2014 Dr. Sabina Joy VakserIncreased human mobility around the world has led to some conceptual reframing in sociolinguistics in recent years, with the aim of creating more dynamic models of language and society to reflect such movement. In line with recent theorizing, this thesis takes an ethnographically-informed case-study approach to experiences of Russianness among three families in Melbourne, Australia. Tracing migrant trajectories that span six countries – including Russia, Germany, a small republic of the Russian Federation, Belarus, the Ukraine, and Australia – I use a scalar analysis to explore the nature of Russian heritage maintenance and change in family life.
