Human papillomavirus and other sexually transmitted infections in men who have sex with men

© 2013 Dr. Huachun ZouMany men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for both bacterial and viral sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection among MSM is common, leading to morbidity including anogenital warts and anal cancer. HPV vaccination has the potential to prevent much of this morbidity in MSM. Guidelines recommend frequent screening of other STIs among MSM – including bacterial STIs such as gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and syphilis, to ensure timely detection and treatment so as to reduce STIs-related burden and prevention further transmission. The two separate, major aims of this thesis were: Aim 1: To examine the prevalence of HPV and risk factors for HPV acquisition among teenage MSM and investigate the concept of targeted HPV vaccination of teenage MSM. Aim 2: To investigate clinic-based interventions aimed at increasing the screening and detection of bacterial STIs among MSM
