Ongoing research into the atrial substrate responsible for maintaining atrial fibrillation is fundamental to therapeutic advances. There have been considerable advances in ablation techniques aimed at treating and potentially curing atrial fibrillation. To date success has been achieved predominantly in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with structurally normal hearts where presumably the triggers are more important than the substrate.
