The Finnish pulp and paper industry alone generates about 430 000 tons of sludge every year. To overcome the problems related to the treatment of this high moisture mass, advanced thermal treatment methods in addition to traditional incineration are under research. One possible solution could be hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). By hydrothermally processing biosludge into hydrochar, which is significantly more valuable than the initial low heat value slurry, additional profit could be obtained. The liquid phase generated during the process has a high organic content and further wastewater treatment of this filtrate is required.
