Translation of Croatian Culture-Specific Items and Dialects into English in Literary Texts

This thesis comprises five annotated translations, accompanied by a discussion. Excerpts from three texts were translated from English into Croatian (Cultures and Organizations: Software of the Mind. Intercultural Cooperation and Its Importance for Survival by G. Hofstede, GJ Hofstede and M. Minkov, A University Education by D. Willetts and Plain Language Summaries of Cochrane Reviews), and two from Croatian into English (Starčevačka kultura na lokalitetu Tomašanci-Palača and Društvene igre by A. Škare). The aim of this discussion was to analyze different translation issues and strategies for dealing with them in literary texts. In the first part of the discussion, a theoretical framework was offered for the concepts of dialect and slang, and in the second part, the same was done for the related concepts which were culture-specific items and idiomatic expressions. This included definitions, descriptions of various different translation strategies used when dealing with them and opinions of different authors and translators on which of these strategies might work better in a particular context. Moreover, relevant examples from the portion of the Croatian short story Mediteranski vestern were used to illustrate the problems of translating culture.Ovaj diplomski rad sastoji se od pet anotiranih prijevoda i diskusije. Dijelovi iz tri teksta prevedeni su s engleskog na hrvatski (Cultures and Organizations: Software of the Mind. Intercultural Cooperation and Its Importance for Survival G. Hofsteda, GJ Hofsteda i M. Minkova, A University Education D. Willettsa ilaički sažetci Cochraneovih sustavnih pregleda), a dijelovi iz druga dva teksta s hrvatskog na engleski(Starčevačka kultura na lokalitetu Tomašanci-Palača i Društvene igre A.Škare. Cilj rasprave je bio analizirati različite probleme u prevođenju i strategije za njihovo rješavanje u književnim tekstovima. U prvom dijelu rasprave ponuđen je teorijski okvir za koncepte dijalekta i slenga, a u drugom dijelu isto je učinjeno i za povezane pojmove: kulturno specifične termine i frazeme. Navedene su definicije, opisi različitih prevoditeljskih strategija koje se koriste u prevođenju takvih izraza i mišljenja različitih autora i prevoditelja o tome koje od tih strategija je bolje primjeniti u određenom kontekstu.
