ENGLISH MONOPOLY GAME USED BY ENGLISH TEACHER AS TEACHING STRATEGY IN READING CLASS AT SMA AL-IZZAH BATU

This research intends to explain about the English Monopoly Game used by English teacher of SMA Al-Izzah Batu. English Monopoly Game is a didactic game made by the teacher that aims to increase the students’ ability in reading skill. The objective of this study is designed to know the implementation of English Monopoly Game. It is also designed to know the strengths and weaknesses of English Monopoly Game as teaching strategy in teaching reading class. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The instruments for collecting the data were observation, field notes, and interviews. The subject of this study was the English teacher that used English Monopoly Game for teaching reading at 10th grade students of SMA Al-Izzah Batu. The findings of this research showed that the teacher used cooperative learning strategy to implement English Monopoly Game. The result from the observation data revealed that the teacher asked the students to play the game in a group. The teacher also used three steps such as; 1) pre-teaching activity, 2) main-teaching activity, and 3) post-teaching activity to implement English Monopoly Game. The findings also showed that the strengths and weaknesses of English Monopoly Game. The strengths were; the teacher could see directly to the students’ ability toward materials that the students struggled with. Besides, the teacher had many opportunities to express an emotional experience with students. Meanwhile the weaknesses of English monopoly game were; the teacher must prepare the game as well and understandable. The game requires more energy, thought, and time before the teacher could serve the game to the students
