MOTIVATION OF THAILAND STUDENTS IN LEARNING ENGLISH SPEAKING AT ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT UMM

The aims of this study is to investigate: (1) Thailand students motivation in learning English speaking; (2) factors that influence Thailand students’ motivation in learning English speaking; (3) and lecturers’ strategies to motivate the students in learning English speaking. In this study, the researcher applied mix method research design because the data were collected in the form of number and words. The data were collected by giving questionnaires. Moreover, the data also collected by interviewing the Thailand students and the English speaking lecturer. Based on the research findings, it was found out that out of 10 students under investigation, 4 students had high motivation, 6 students had low motivation, and no students had very low and very high motivation in learning English speaking. Meanwhile, there were two categories of the factors which influenced the Thailand students in learning speaking. They were intrinsic factor and extrinsic motivations. Intrinsic factors were; the Thailand students were motivated to learn because (1) they had self-determination; (2) they had expectation about theirself and they valued the subject; (3) they had high interest on it; (4) it connected with their personal goal; (5) and they had attribution aspect on themselves. On the other hand, the extrinsic factors were; the Thailand students were motivated to learn because (1) they expected reward from the lecturer , (2) they were motivate by punishment and (3) the condition of classroom environtment. Futhermore, the lecturer applied some strategies to motivate the students. They were (1) by setting good example, (2) made the students familiar with L2 culture, and (3) made relativeness of the material with students’ interest
