STUDENTS' RESPONSE TOWARD THE TECHNIQUES OF TEACHING READING USED BY THE LECTURER AT ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

This study is focused on the techniques of teaching reading applied by the lecturer at English Language Education Department, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The purposes of this study are (1) to identify the techniques of teaching reading used by the lecturer; (2) to describe the way the lecturer apply the techniques; and (3) to describe the students' response toward the techniques of teaching reading. This study was a qualitative research because it was aimed to obtain the information about the implementation of the techniques of teaching reading applied by the lecturer and to describe the students' response towards the techniques of teaching reading used by the lecturer. The data collection was conducted through interview, observation, and questionnaire. The research subjects of this study were the lecturer and the students on the Reading Comprehension 2, C class. The result of the study showed that the techniques of teaching reading applied by the lecturer were Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA), Reciprocal Teaching, and Summarization. The lecturer applied the techniques by modifying the steps to adapt with the students' needs and characteristics in the teaching learning process. Moreover, the result showed that the students had positive, neutral and negative response towards Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA), Reciprocal Teaching, and Summarization
