Scientific Approach Used by the English Teacher in Teaching Speaking at the Seventh Grade at SMPN 18 Malang

English is positioned as an indispensable tool in global competition through the utilization of science and technology as well as trade, commerce and other human-interaction activities. Because of its position, willing or not, people need to develop English proficiency in order to survive on globalization and ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA). Knowing the fact, Indonesia establishes English as a compulsory at junior high school in order to prepare students with the needed skill in 21th century. However, teaching English speaking skill is difficult since it is a foreign language where students do not get an exposure from their environment. One of ways to provide students with the English environment is the implementation of scientific approach. Students act directly either individually or in groups to explore the concept and principles during the learning activities. Scientific approach provides student's center in the interaction. Therefore, it makes students have more interest and active in speaking during teaching learning process. This research was descriptive qualitative research because it was aimed to investigate the implementation, advantages, and disadvantages of Scientific Approach in teaching speaking at the seventh grade at SMP N 18 Malang. In addition, the data collection was conducted through observation (non-participant observation) and interview (semi-structured interview). The research subject of this study was an English teacher at SMP N 18 Malang. The result of the study showed that the stages of Scientific Approach were implemented well based on five phases namely (1) observation, (2) questioning, (3) collecting data, (4) associating, and (5) networking. The researcher found some advantages during the scientific approach teaching and learning process such as the students were more interactive, more communicative; and more aware of their environment. In contrast, some disadvantages was also found during the implementation of scientific approach such as the teacher needed to prepare several media to attract the students' interest; the teacher had to understand and apply several kinds of teaching techniques to avoid the students' boredom; the teacher had more difficulties in classroom management; the students tended to use hand phone irrelevantly with the task given To sum up, Scientific Approach ran well based on its procedure.
