AN ANALYSIS OF CODE SWITCHING IN ENGLISH CLASS FOR THE EIGHT GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI I DAU

Code switching is the use of two or more languages in the same utterance or conversation. Code switching is mostly used in bilingual society. In Indonesia, the teacher uses code switching as one of strategies in teaching English. This study analyzed and examined the use of code switching and students' responses toward the use of code switching in English Class of SMP Negeri I Dau. This study employed descriptive qualitative research design to get more valid data. Meanwhile, the subjects of this study are English teacher who employed code switching and Eight Grade students of SMP Negeri I Dau. This study uses observation and interview as the instruments. In this study, the writer found forty-seven code switching used by English teacher of SMP Negeri I Dau. The code switching was divided into three kinds. They were twenty-two inter-sentential code switching, eighteen intra-sentential code switching and seven tag-switching. Furthermore, the teacher used code switching in different situations; 1) to greet and ask student's feeling, 2) to open the class activity, 3) to give an instruction, 4) to get students' attention. The students' responses were they were motivated to practice English. Moreover, they learned new vocabulary and English grammar. Code switching is one of strategies for teaching English which gives some benefits for the teacher and students
