The oxidative dissolution of iron in ammoniacal-carbonate solutions containing nickel(II) and thiosulfate ions was found to result in the formation of a nickel sulfide layer which, based on Grazing Incidence X-Ray Diffraction (GIXRD) studies conducted on the iron surface following immersion, was found to contain Ni3S2. Consistent with this, linear sweep and rotating disk cyclic voltammetry measurements conducted with the iron electrode following immersion in these solutions resulted in the presence of an anodic peak thought to correspond to the oxidation of the nickel sulfide layer.
