This presentation describes the assimilation of airborne measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) general circulation model. The main goal is to construct observationally constrained fields of CO2 starting from the bottom of the atmosphere and extending through the entire vertical column. These fields can then be compared directly to retrievals of column CO2 (XCO2) from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) and the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2) by using the averaging kernel and a priori profile. This approach does not equire a direct satellite overpass, but rather an overpass of the much broader region impacted by the assimilation, which alleviates some of the jeopardy of coordin...
