The simple caution is a formal warning given by the police to people aged 18 and over. It is an out-of-court disposal that is intended to be a simple and effective response to low-level, mainly first-time, offending. In recent years the use of the simple caution has been the focus of media criticism and Government review. Most often because of allegations that it is too often used as a ‘soft option’ for more serious and repeat offenders.
