Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of irreversible central sight loss in the elderly. Many factors affect disease onset and progression, and these include age, environmental stressors such as smoking, diet, inflammation and genetic polymorphisms, all of which are likely to influence metabolism. In some complex diseases, metabolomics, which involves the identification of a metabolic fingerprint in a biofluid or tissue, has been shown to discriminate metabolic changes associated with different disease processes and to identify specific phenotypes.
