Exploring the older adult's view of e-health and its potential for engagement and empowerment: First phase of a community based participatory action research study.

Background: Contemporary nursing literature emphasises that health and wellbeing factors should be maximised to achieve positive outcomes. The role of the person in this process and their contribution to their own wellbeing is crucial to promote such involvement if the ideals of NHS Scotland's quality strategy are to be realised. This is expanded within the e-health strategy which proposes innovative technological solutions to current issues in healthcare provision. Evidence: Existing research indicates that there are already encouraging outcomes from telemonitoring interventions within the UK and technologies are acceptable to some service users. However, a review of the literature identified that the patient or service users perspective of e-health has not yet been explored comprehensively. With expanding technology this is an important area of concern for nurses of the 21st Century. Proposed study: A participatory action research study is proposed which has an overarching aim to illuminate the views of older adults in the community with regards to e-health and self management. Method: Through participative action research focus groups it is proposed that consciousness be raised by a collaborative approach. Group meetings will generate topical discussion and data will be collated and analysed by focus groups. Implications for Practice: This study aims to achieve insight and enhancement of knowledge for all in a supportive and empowering environment. Participants can take new insights forward into any future interactions with the healthcare system.
