'National Theatre of Scotland' or Just 'Theatre of Scotland'? An Examination of The Relationship Between National Identity and National Theatre.

The intentions of this study are to provide a relevant and coherent commentary on the role of national theatre in a modern political and societal environment. The majority of this assessment is carried out in regards to the National Theatre of Scotland and its role in playing for a modern Scottish audience - asking the question of whether or not this company is deserving of the roles and responsibilities of Scotland's national theatre company. This is carried out through copious research into theories of national identity, with an in depth look at Scottish identity and culture, and the recent history of national theatre, focussing largely on European definitions of national theatre, using the National Theatre and National Theatre of Scotland as main examples of two differing models. Research has also been undertaken into the type of theatre and locations the National Theatre of Scotland has been creating and performing in respectively - presented as statistics and used to back up many theoretical points throughout the study. The outcome of this study is that the National Theatre of Scotland could do more to embrace their national role by taking a greater interest in utilising Scottish forms and theatrical traditions in the creation and dissemination of their theatrical products.ba_dapunpub1555_ethesesunpu
