The intentions of this study are to provide a relevant and coherent commentary on the role of national theatre in a modern political and societal environment. The majority of this assessment is carried out in regards to the National Theatre of Scotland and its role in playing for a modern Scottish audience - asking the question of whether or not this company is deserving of the roles and responsibilities of Scotland's national theatre company. This is carried out through copious research into theories of national identity, with an in depth look at Scottish identity and culture, and the recent history of national theatre, focussing largely on European definitions of national theatre, using the National Theatre and National Theatre of Scotlan...
