An analysis and exploration into the creative vision of Cirque Du Soleil and how this is represented within character makeup.

It is the intent of this study to explore the unique and organic process used by Cirque Du Soleil in devising performances and how this has resulted in a distinguished creative style that has become recognised throughout the world and evident in every aspect of their shows. More specifically looking at and discussing the creative style evident within the makeup designs of characters. It will also examine the cultural influences present within Cirque Du Soleil shows and explore how the makeup is adapted to blend elements of traditional culture with their creative makeup style. Research will involve an investigation into the background of Cirque Du Soleil as well as exploring the political, personal and traditional influences that affected the development of Cirque's theatrical and creative style. It will additionally explore the unique process in which Cirque Du Soleil formulate their shows and how this process affects design elements, more specifically the makeup design of characters. It will examine how and why Cirque Du Soleil create character makeup that has been inspired by traditional cultures and the research aims to provide a previously unknown knowledge and understanding of this process. In order to explore this, I have designed and created a character makeup that is inspired by Chinese Opera makeup and uses the same process of creation and style present in Cirque Du Soleil makeup.ba_dapunpub1552_ethesesunpu
