Previous research has emphasised the importance of the shift in identity in a successful recovery journey. The current study aims to understand the catalyst for positive behaviour change and use Mezirow’s transformative learning theory to explain the experience of the transition from an addict identity to a recovery identity. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sample of five men aged twenty to forty-eight in the early stages of recovery from substance misuse with a mean recovery period of sixteen months.
