Speed, nature, and knowledge transfer of spelling acquisition were taken into account. Four orthographic characteristics that influence early spelling, namely, ‘Type of Grapheme’, ‘Grapheme Position’, ‘Number of Graphemes’, and ‘Word Structure’ were examined at the middle and at the end of first grade.
