National audienceThe study of the faunal remains from the Upper Magdalenian layer at Isturitz was undertaken as a complementary part of an experimental program concerning upper Magdalenian hunting weapons. An inspection of the faunal assemblage (MAN, Passemard and Saint-Périer collections, layers F1 and I) showed important lacks: the material was much less abundant than reported in the original literature. However, the historiographic reconstruction of the excavation allowed us a more accurate interpretation of certain statements in the excavators’ publications: we were able to evaluate and partly adjust the distortions due to the dated excavation techniques and/or the collections’ hazardous fate.
