Les remakes comme témoins de la poétique du cinéma d’horreur hollywoodien contemporain

International audienceThis articles focuses on the recent cycle of Hollywood remakes of American horror movies of the 1970s-1980s. Comparative analysis reveals the extent to which the big budget remakes of the 2000s testify to a homogenization of contemporary Hollywood horror aesthetics regardless of the subgenre. This standardization owes much, on the one hand, to the contemporary mainstream style David Bordwell has labeled “intensified contitnuity” and, on the other, to the tendency of taking the slasher, a subgenre that dominated the 1980s-1990s, as a model. This article emphasizes two consequences of this homogenization: first, it makes for an poetics that is not always coherent with the figure of horror represented in each film; and second it testifies to an impoverishment of formal options within each film, the remakes proposing overall less variation than the original films. The deficiencies of these films have thus less to do with their status as remakes as with their tendency to recycle hackneyed conventions. Particular attention is paid to Dawn of the Dead (Zack Snyder, 2004) and Halloween (Zombie, 2007).Cet article porte sur le cycle de remakes hollywoodiens des années 2000 de films d’horreur américains des années 1970-1980. L’analyse comparative permet de déterminer dans quelle mesure ces remakes à gros budget témoignent d’une homogénéisation de l’esthétique du film d’horreur hollywoodien contemporain quel que soit le sous-genre concerné. Cette uniformisation relève, d’une part, d’un style commun au cinéma grand public que David Bordwell a nommé la « continuité intensifiée », et, de l’autre, d’une tendance à prendre le slasher, sous-genre qui a dominé le cinéma d’horreur dans les années 1980-1990, comme modèle. Deux conséquences sont alors relevées : cette homogénéisation donne lieu à (1) une esthétique qui n’est pas toujours en cohérence avec la figure de l’horreur représentée ; et (2) à un épuisement formel à l’intérieur même des films, les remakes proposant moins de variations que les originaux. Les déficiences de ces films n’ont pas tant à voir avec leur statut de remake, mais avec leur tendance à recycler des conventions bien en place. Cette étude se penche principalement sur deux remakes qui ont connu un certain succès commercial : L’Armée des morts (Zack Snyder, 2004) et Halloween (Zombie, 2007)
