The relationship between environmental degradation and economic growth : role of policies and international agreements

This master thesis analyses the relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation considering as pollutant carbon dioxide and its emissions’ effects on eight countries from 1960 to 2016, through the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. The key feature is to explore the impact of the introduction of environmental policies, the Kyoto Protocol and Asian Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP). The first policy imposes in its statement an emission target, whereas in the APP countries involved have only committed for the reduction of the emissions, privileging renewable resources and clean technology. In this context, it is possible to discuss the effects of those policies and the role of enforceability to achieve the emissions reduction. This study provides an insight on the findings concerning the weaknesses of the standard models (EKC through unit root, cointegration and structural break tests. In this setup, the study discusses the role of each agreement in the relation between emissions and economic growth. The results show that correcting for cointegration the evidence of EKC hypothesis are weaker and that the effects of Kyoto Protocol exist but not as significant as expected, probably due to the still short period of time after its implementation.Esta tese de mestrado analisa a relação entre o crescimento económico e a degradação ambiental, considerando os efeitos do dióxido de carbono e suas emissões em oito países entre 1960 e 2016, através da hipótese EKC. A característica principal é explorar o impacto da introdução de políticas ambientais, como o Protocolo de Quioto (PQ) e a Asian Pacific Partnership (APP). A primeira política impõe uma meta nos níveis de emissão, enquanto no APP os países envolvidos comprometeram-se apenas com a redução das emissões, privilegiando os recursos renováveis e a tecnologia limpa. Neste contexto, é possível analisar os efeitos dessas políticas e o papel do estabelecimento de uma meta para alcáçar a redução de emissões. Este estudo fornece uma visão acerca das fraquezas dos modelos standard (EKC), através de testes de raiz unitária, cointegração e quebra estrutural. Neste contexto, o estudo discute o papel de cada acordo na relação entre emissões e crescimento económico. Os resultados mostram que, corrigindo-se a cointegração, a evidência das hipóteses EKC são mais fracas e que os efeitos do Protocolo de Quioto existem, mas não são tão significativos quanto o esperado, provavelmente devido ao ainda curto período de tempo após a sua implementação
