The binary theory of emotional distress is a core element in the theory and practice of rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT). However, there exists some debate in the literature as to the validity of the binary theory of emotional distress due to sparse empirical evidence in support of it. The present article employs the cognitive disputation therapeutic process used in REBT (empirical, logical, and pragmatic arguments) to take a critical look at the binary theory of emotional distress. We aim to execute a balanced and informed approach to the theory to stimulate discussion and debate with our fellow researchers and practitioners in the field
