National audienceThis article focuses on Avignon's jail from 1811 to 1871. More specifically, it adresses how reforms of the penitentiary system during the 19th century had local repercussions. Far from the idea of a " modern prison " as wished by its reformers due to a lack of space, Avignon's jail experienced however some changes. The article analyzes also the changes in the penitentiary administration from 1841 on, the increasing role of the government and the church in its operation.
