During vertebrate gastrulation, a well-orchestrated series of cell movements leads to the formation of the three germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm. In zebrafish, a model organism for vertebrate development, the mesendodermal progenitor cells separate from the ectodermal cells and migrate towards the animal pole.
