The present work describes new aspects of organic and supramolecular chemistry. The scientific contribution consists of two parts, which focus on the development of receptors for the sulfate anion and quantitative assessment of stacking interactions between an anthracene dye and nucleobases in an aqueous solution. In Chapter 1, basic concepts concerning supramolecular chemistry and recognition of cations and anions are discussed, as well as modern methods for the determination of binding constants. Particular attention is paid to fluorescence sensing of ions and underlying mechanisms of binding-induced fluorescence responses.
