After a rapid increase followed by a stabilization, childhood obesity prevalence remains high in many countries. Trends in nutritional intakes hardly explain this epidemic as while obesity was increasing, energy intake was decreasing, particularly due to decreasing fat intake. However, the role of nutrition in early life can explain this paradox. There is now increasing evidence that early life environment has a long-term effect on health in adulthood ("the first 1000 days"). The early adiposity rebound recorded in most obese children suggests such an early "programming".
