Synthesis and Catalytic Properties of Zeolites Using Diazolium-Based Organic Structure-Directing Agents

DoctorZeolites and related materials, an extraordinary class of microporous, crystalline solids with regular and well-defined channels and cavities, continue to find new applications in adsorption, separation, and catalysis. Consequently, there is still need for synthesizing zeolitic materials with novel framework structures and/or compositions. It was in the early 1960s when Barrer first introduced tetramethylammonium into the synthesis mixture of Si-rich zeolite A. Since then, the use of alkylamines and alkylammonium ions as organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) in zeolite synthesis, both with and without inorganic species present, has enabled discovery of a great number of novel zeolites. In this thesis we have synthesized a number of the novel zeolites using diverse diazolium cations prepared by quaternizing diazole derivatives, with five-membered aromatic ring consisting of three carbon atoms and two nitrogen atoms, as an OSDA; the two isomers are imidazolium and pyrazolium cations, containing two non-adjacent N atoms and two adjacent N atoms, respectively. We have also investigated the catalytic properties of our novel materials in Brønsted acid- and metal-catalyzed reactions, i.e., as catalyst supports as well as catalysts, and described a series of chemically feasible hypothetical structures on the basis of the structure of our novel materials. Finally, we have elucidated charge distribution and conformational stability effects of OSDAs on the phase selectivity of the zeolite crystallization through the comparison between a series of imidazolium and pyrazolium derivatives with the same geometric shape but different positions of nitrogen atoms as an OSDA. 1. We have synthesized an aluminosilicate RTH-type zeolite with Si/Al = 10 using 1,2,3-trimethylimidazolium as an OSDA together with Na+ or K+ in hydroxide media and without the use of seed crystals. The zeolite obtained is characterized by a cuboid morphology made of very small ill-defined crystallites, largely different from the plank-like morphology typically observed for RTH-type zeolite crystals thus far. When hydrothermally aged at 750 °C, Cu-RTH is much less active for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) than Cu-SSZ-13, the best catalyst known for this reaction to date. HPM-5, a porous aluminosilicate with an intricate and so far unsolved structure, has also been synthesized under the synthesis conditions similar to that for the RTH zeolites but with low Al contents. The results of a high-resolution transmission electron microscopy study suggest HPM-5 may be far more complicated than ‘standard’ layered zeolites and may consist of low-density layers profusely decorated by holes. The resulting lace-like layers may be too unstable to withstand reactions characteristic of more conventional layered materials (both delamination and expansion by silylation); the layers are apparently disassembled and, at most, only ribbons remain. 2. The mechanism of the 1-butene skeletal isomerization catalyzed by zeolites has remained elusive. We present direct evidence that even the initial isobutene formation over H-ferrierite, the best-known isomerization catalyst, is monomolecular in nature by using 13C-enriched 1-butene, whereas a bimolecular pathway is significant over the unselective H-ZSM-5. We also report that medium-pore high-silica H-HPM-1 (Si/Al = 110) outperforms H-ferrierite in selectively forming isobutene. This new catalyst displays a high activity and selectivity from the onset of the reaction, as well as an excellent resistance to deactivation, thanks to its anomalously weak acidity and low acid site density, together with an ability to effectively isolate reactant molecules from one another. In addition, we have investigated the effect of acid site density on the catalytic performance of high-silica (50 ≤ Si/Al ≤ 380) H-HPM-1 zeolite in the 1-butene skeletal isomerization. Changes (≤ 0.5) in the number of framework Al atoms, and thus of Brønsted acid sites, per unit cell (60 tetrahedral atoms) led to striking variations in both 1-butene conversion and isobutene selectivity. Combining isobutene yield with catalyst durability, H-HPM-1 with a framework Si/Al ratio of 350 was found to perform better than any of the catalysts studied for this reaction thus far. Finally, the use of 13C-enriched isobutene in the reverse skeletal isomerization of 1-butene over zeolite catalysts allowed us to corroborate that the mechanisms for the reverse reaction were essentially the same as those for the forward reaction, regardless of the structure type of the catalyst employed. 3. A series of LTA zeolites with Si/Al = 8.3-∞ and a UFI zeolite with Si/Al = 11 are synthesized using benzylimidazolium-based cations as OSDAs in fluoride media, if required, together with the tetramethylammonium ion. Two LTA zeolites with Si/Al = 11 and 16 showed an enhanced operating temperature window with excellent thermal durability for NH3-SCR, compared to Cu-SSZ-13 commercially being used for automotive applications. 4. We report the synthesis of two such materials made up of the 1,3-stellated cubic unit (hexahedral ([4254]) bre unit) as a secondary building unit, with the aid of existing imidazolium-based structure-directing agents under ‘excess’ fluoride conditions. One of them, denoted PST-21, is the first aluminosilicate zeolite consisting of 9-ring apertures solely, with exceptional activity towards skeletal isomerization steering of 1-butene to isobutene, which bridges the gap between small and medium pore structures. We also describe a series of hypothetical structures nonjointly built from the bre unit, all of which are chemically feasible and will thus be helpful in designing the synthesis of novel zeolites containing 9-ring and/or 10-ring channels. 5. While the use of the so-called OSDAs is no stranger to zeolite synthesis at all, the effects of their charge distribution and conformational stability on the phase selectivity of the crystallization remain elusive. To systematically investigate these effects, we have prepared a series of imidazolium and pyrazolium derivatives with the same geometric shape but different positions of nitrogen atoms in the five-membered heterocyclic aromatic ring and used them as OSDAs for the synthesis of zeolites with pure-silica composition. Meaningful differences in the zeolite product were observed.본 논문은 알킬 또는 벤질기를 포함하는 다양한 다이아졸리움 양이온들을 유기구조유도분자로 이용한 제올라이트 합성과 그것들의 1-butene 이성질화 반응 및 NOx의 암모니아 선택적 환원 반응에 관한 촉매적 특성을 서술하고 있다. 제 3 장에서는, OH- media 및 넓은 Si/Al 비율 (5-∞) 하에서 다양한 +1가 무기 양이온들과 함께 1,2,3-trimethylimidazolium (123TMI)을 유기구조유도물질로 이용하여 제올라이트 합성을 수행하였다. 합성 혼합물에 F-가 존재하지 않을 경우, 기존에 잘 알려진 123TMI의 ITW 제올라이트를 향한 선택적 구조유도능력은 발현되지 않았다. 대신 OH media에서 무기 양이온들과 함께 쓰일 때, 123TMI은 제한적인 특정 조성에서는 (Si/Al = 10 그리고 Na+ 또는 K+와 함께) RTH 제올라이트를, 넓은 조성 범위에서는 (Si/Al ≥ 20 그리고 여러 무기 양이온들과 함께) HPM-5라 이름 붙여진 새로운 물질의 합성을 유도하였다. As-made 상태에서 RTH cavity ([46586484]) 한 개당 두 개의 123TMI 양이온들이 포함되어 있음은 원소 및 열중량 분석을 통해 실험적으로 입증되었을 뿐 아니라, 가속기 분말 XRD 데이터를 이용한 Rietveld 분석을 통해 RTH cavity 내부의 123TMI 양이온들이 각각의 고리 중심을 기준으로 약 4.0 Å 떨어져 있으며 antiparallel dimer 형태를 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 한편, 꽃 모양의 결정을 가지는 HPM-5은 폭이 넓고 서로 중첩된 피크들로 이루어진 분말 XRD 패턴으로 특징지어진다. 비록 Cs-corrected STEM 분석을 통해 as-made 및 소성된 HPM-5 샘플들 둘 다 다공성의 layered 구조를 지닌다는 것을 알 수 있었으나, 그것을 통해 더 자세한 구조를 알 수는 없었다. 또한 STEM 분석은 HPM-5으로부터 파생된 물질들은 거의 구조가 해체되어 있음을 알려주었고, 이는 HPM-5의 구조가 delamination 및 interlayer expansion 등의 처리들을 버텨내기에는 불안정함을 의미한다. 제 4 장에서는, H-ferrierite (H-FER) 및 F- media에서 2-ethyl-1,3,4-trimethylimidazolium을 유기구조유도물질로 이용하여 합성한 H-HPM-1 촉매들 상에서 1-butene으로부터의 선택적 isobutene 생성이 단분자 반응경로를 통해 이루어짐을 1-[1-13C]butene을 이용한 13C scrambling 실험을 통해 입증하였다. 또한, 1-[1-13C]methylpropene을 이용한 13C scrambling 실험을 통해 isobutene으로부터의 역반응은 원론적으로 제올라이트 구조와 관계없이 정반응과 같은 메커니즘을 통해 이루어진다는 것을 알 수 있었다. H-FER보다 더 높은 활성과 선택성을 보여주는 H-HPM-1의 예외적인 촉매능은 다음과 같은 요인들의 조합으로부터 기인한 것으로 볼 수 있다: 1) oligomerization 반응을 억제하는 낮은 산점 농도와 reactant isolation 효과; 2) cracking 반응을 억제하는 약한 산점 세기; 3) 높은 활성을 야기하는 10-ring 세공의 낮은 타원율. 결국, 이 모든 것들은 주로 d4r unit들이 이용되어 구성됨과 동시에 일련의 연속적인 cavity들로 이루어지는 3-dimensional 10-ring 원형 세공 체계를 지닌 이 새로운 제올라이트의 독특한 구조에 기인한다. 추가로, 네 가지 다른 Si/Al 비율 (50-380)을 가지는 HPM-1 제올라이트들을 합성하여 1-butene 이성질화 반응에 대한 촉매적 특성을 평가하였다. 그 결과, 단위 격자 (60 T-atoms) 당 0.2 또는 0.5 개에 해당하는 골격 내 알루미늄 양의 변화가 이 제올라이트들의 촉매능에 큰 영향을 미치는 것을 알 수 있었다. Si/Al 비율이 증가할수록 isobutene 선택도는 증가하는 반면, 전환율은 많이 감소하였다. Isobutene 수율과 촉매 내구성 둘 모두를 고려할 때, 210의 Si/Al 비율을 가지는 H-HPM-1 촉매가 현재까지 시험된 이성질화 촉매 중 가장 최적의 촉매이다. 제 5 장에서는, F- media에서 LTA 씨결정과 tetramethylammonium (TMA) 둘 모두의 도움 없이 1,2-dimethyl-3-(4-methylbenzyl)imidazolium (12DM3(4MB)I) 또는 1,2-dimethyl-3-(2-fluorobenzyl)imidazolium (12DM3(2FB)I)을 유기구조유도물질로 이용하여 순수한 실리카 조성의 LTA 제올라이트를 합성하였다. Fluorescence 분광 분석은 이 as-made LTA에 π 전자 간 상호작용이 존재하지 않는 것을 보여주었다. 나아가 TMA와 함께 (필요한 경우, LTA 씨결정까지도) 12DM3(4MB)I을 이용하여 Si/Al > 8의 조성을 가지는 LTA 제올라이트들을 합성한 반면, 12DM3(2FB)I와 TMA를 결합하여 이용했을 때에는 Si/Al = 11의 조성을 가지는 UFI 제올라이트 (PST-7이라 명명)을 합성할 수 있었다. 더욱 흥미롭게도, Si/Al = 11 또는 16의 구리로 이온 교환된 LTA (Cu-LTA) 제올라이트들은 750 °C에서의 열수 노화 이후에도 NOx의 암모니아 선택적 환원 반응에 대하여 높은 활성과 내구성을 보여주었고, 이는 자동차 산업에서 중요한 과제 중 하나인 진보된 선택적 환원 반응 촉매 개발을 위한 새로운 방향을 제시하고 있다. 제 6 장에서는, bre unit이 secondary building unit이 되는 두 가지 새로운 구조의 제올라이트, PST-21 및 PST-22를 메틸기가 치환된 이미다졸리움 및 과량의 F- 존재 하에서 합성하였다. 교차하는 9-ring (4.3 × 5.4 Å) 채널을 갖는 첫 번째 알루미노실리케이트 제올라이트인 PST-21은 1-butene 이성질화 반응에서 이례적인 촉매능을 보여주었다. PST-22의 세공 구조는 PST-21와 마찬가지로 2-dimensional 세공 체계이나, 8-ring (2.7 × 6.0 Å) 세공으로 서로 연결된 사인 곡선 모양의 10-ring (5.7 × 5.8 Å) 채널로 이루어져 있다. 또한, 화학적으로 실현 가능한 bre unit으로부터 비접합적으로 구성된 총 10개의 가상 제올라이트 구조를 만들어냈다. 제 7 장에서는, 분자 모양은 같으나 전하 분포는 다른 일련의 이미다졸리움 및 파이라졸리움 유도체들을 유기구조유도물질로 이용하여 제올라이트 합성을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 유기구조유도물질의 전하 분포 및 입체 배치적 안정성의 차이가 제올라이트 결정화 과정에서의 상선택성에 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구의 종합적 성과는 유기구조유도물질에 의한 구조 유도를 더 깊이 이해하는 데 있어 중요한 시사점을 가져다 줄 것이다. 종합적으로, 새로운 조성을 가지는 RTH, HPM-5, STW (HPM-1), LTA, UFI (PST-7) 제올라이트 및 새로운 구조를 가지는 PST-21, PST-22 제올라이트를 합성할 수 있었다. 특히, PST-21 및 PST-22 제올라이트는 과량의 F-를 이용하는 새로운 합성 방법을 통해 만들 수 있었다. 이들 제올라이트 중, H-HPM-1, H-PST-21, H-PST-22는 1-butene 이성질화 반응에서 본 반응 촉매로 가장 잘 알려진 H-FER을 능가하는 촉매능을 보여주었고, Cu-LTA는 NOx의 암모니아 선택적 환원 반응에서 실제 자동차 적용되고 있는 Cu-SSZ-13보다 더 뛰어난 열적 내구성 및 더 넓은 운전 가능 온도 범위를 보여주었다. 이들의 우수한 촉매적 성능과 별개로, 본 논문에서 밝힌 독특한 촉매적 특성 및 통찰은 제올라이트 촉매 작용을 더 깊이 이해하는 데 있어 큰 영향을 미칠 것으로 조망한다
