La famille retranchée. Transmission foncière et alliances chez les colons de Martinique (XVIIe-XVIIIe siècle), p. 143-161

International audienceAt the end of the 17th and 18th century, plantation owners represent a dominant minority group within the colonial society of Martinique. Nevertheless, the few hundred families belonging to this socio-economic elite have to meet the challenge of the conservation of the integrity of their properties, which is threatened by the implementation of the Custom of Paris. These laws, as well as a growing and chronic debt, are indeed contrary to this challenge. In order to avoid the impoverishment and the dispersion of assets, families develop strategic alliances such as late marriage for boys and endogamy. The socio-cultural and demographic consequences of this strategy could be important (consanguinity, confinement into one's community, coloured children born out of wedlock), but its results are efficient from a patrimonial standpoint.Le groupe des habitants sucriers constitue à la fin du XVIIe et au XVIIIe s. une minorité dominante au sein de la société coloniale martiniquaise. Les quelques centaines de familles de cette élite socio-économique sont néanmoins confrontées au défi de la conservation de l’intégrité de leurs propriétés. Celle-ci est en effet menacée par l’application de la coutume de Paris, largement contraire à cet objectif, ainsi qu’à un endettement chronique et croissant. Pour éviter la dispersion des biens et l’appauvrissement, les familles mettent en place des stratégies d’alliances fondées sur le retard au mariage pour les garçons et l’endogamie. Si elles ont de lourdes répercussions socio-culturelles et démographiques (consanguinité, repli communautaire, naissance d’enfants de couleur hors mariage), elles s’avèrent efficaces sur le plan patrimonial
