International audienceAt the end of the 17th and 18th century, plantation owners represent a dominant minority group within the colonial society of Martinique. Nevertheless, the few hundred families belonging to this socio-economic elite have to meet the challenge of the conservation of the integrity of their properties, which is threatened by the implementation of the Custom of Paris. These laws, as well as a growing and chronic debt, are indeed contrary to this challenge. In order to avoid the impoverishment and the dispersion of assets, families develop strategic alliances such as late marriage for boys and endogamy.
