International audienceCharacterised by their morphology, depth and their place within the landscape, Mesolithic pits raise many questions regarding their nature and function. They are particularly characterised by stratified fills, which are often complex, and composed of alternating dark and lighter coloured layers, which present a cemented aspect. These fills are finely textured and contain frequent carbonate inclusions distributed in the form of granules or white bands. This stratigraphy appears to be recurrent in the majority of the pits recorded.In order to understand the functional significance of these features, a geoarchaeological approach, based on soil micromorphology, has been adopted.
